THE WITNESS

I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, warm thick blood covering my vision of the dark night. Please don’t come after me, I pleaded wildly into the cold night air from the depth of my heart, crying profusely as I uttered the silent prayers. I did not see a thing, I do not know anything ! Forgive me please, I begged in distress to the shady female silhouette gaining speed behind me. I screamed with all my heart but not a word was heard. Only silence. All of a sudden, something caught my left foot and over I went toppling down to the ground, limp, unconscious.

No, no, no ! I came around with a start. It was a terrifying dream that plagued my peace, I knew it was because of "that", the cause of my inner turmoil. The dream was reminiscent of what I saw. The island. The wooden club. The cold expression in a face I am so familiar with as splashes of blood spattered on him. The face of my boyfriend. The helpless sight of Liza drowned in her own pool of blood.

If only I had doze off due to the tiredness I felt, I wouldn’t have witness it all. But I couldn't, when I am tired, I need to unwind slowly. Hence, on I went wandering along the end strip of the beach, crouching quietly behind a large boulder, collecting quirky seashells as souvenirs for my beloved little sister who simply adores the beach when I heard sounds of people talking emitted from a clearing of coconut trees further up my left.

I was a little excited at the idea of someone, maybe a couple out so late and this is where curiosity gets the better of me. I followed quietly, careful not to step on any dry leaves or twigs. Something gleamed in the dark night. A gold ring maybe ? Come on, Sofia, just check it out, nothing to be afraid of I whispered to myself. Slowly, I crept closer. Low and behold, I saw Liza with my boyfriend ! Coconut what ? I can’t hear them clearly, as their voices are too low. Wait ! Are they having an affair behind my back ?? I seethed angrily inside thinking of the worst. A slight whimper brought me back to reality where I watched the usual smiling face of Ipin turned malicious as he brought down the wooden club he snatched up from the ground beside some regular coconut tree onto Liza’s head. She fell to the ground helplessly. Oh My God ! What the hell is he doing ??? Blood seem to ooze out from every corner of Liza’s skull, dying her hair to the color of red wine.

God, this is not happening, I am dreaming I tried telling myself but each blow Liza’s now blood covered head received brought me to reality. Liza lies on the ground and has stopped struggling after the fifth blow she received. I was appalled by the bloody sight, shocked to see him killing my friend. I couldn't believe my own eyes. I ran back to the room I was staying in and tried to forget  everything. It was suppose to be a great holiday for the bunch of us. Why did this have to happen ? What should I do ? Tears of grief and confusion streamed down my  cheeks. I can't tell what I saw or Ipin will hang for sure. But memories of Liza floated into my mind. She was my friend, a close one, too. How can I let her die just like this ?

I left my room and wandered through the dark hall of the resort, my mind still clouded with emotions. It was still raining heavily. As I passed the cafeteria I saw her the detective, she was touching the walls looking for something. My heart skipped a beat. "I have to tell her" I said to myself.
